Designer envisions modern-day BMW M Coupe, we fall in love instantly

BMW, stop putting humps on cars, bring back the M Coupe, please!

In the 1990s, people were already used to the idea of fast hatchbacks, but BMW’s Z3-based “Clown Shoe” M Coupe seemed a bit too much for the commoner’s senses. It looked weird enough to divide BMW fans in two opposite sides: the ones who loved it, and the ones who didn’t know what a cool car looked like.

Finnish designer Esa Mustonen reimagined the M Coupe, using visual elements from modern BMWs, and it’s a real stunner. The modern one even has the Hofmeister kink, a design cue the original one didn’t feature. It also features comically huge wheels, a very in-your-face reminder that this is just someone’s vision, and not a car likely to make it into production.

Which is a bit sad. BMW is continuously refreshing its model lineup — it even offers an MPV, plus there’s going to be a BMW-badged S-Class Coupé rival soon, and the 5 GT’s hump now moved to the 6 Series. No plans for a new “Clown Shoe,” sadly.
