Mercedes-Benz Facelifts GL SUV, Calls It GLS

Mercedes-Benz continues implementing its new model nomenclature with the new GLS, which is nothing more than a facelifted GL

The big luxury SUV is described by the automaker as the “S-Class among SUVs”, hence the “S” in its name. For its second facelift, the seven-seat SUV gets minor styling updates including a refreshed front end with a new grille, new headlights, as well as slightly revised taillights, and a new rear bumper.

Changes are more significant inside, where there’s a newly designed instrument panel with semi-integrated Media Display, new 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, modified center console with touchpad, plus new appointment colors and trim elements.

Compared with the GL, the GLS features improved efficiency, extended Dynamic Select transmission modes, the latest stage of development of the air suspension system Airmatic with enhanced damping system ADS, the 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, new assistance systems as well as the latest telematics generation with internet access.

In Europe, the Mercedes-Benz GLS will be offered with four engine choices: the GLS 350 d 4Matic, GLS 400 4Matic, GLS 500 4Matic and GLS 63 AMG 4Matic. The only diesel unit is the 3.0-liter V6 in the GLS 350 d, rated at 258PS (254hp) and 620Nm (457lb-ft) of torque. The base gasoline engine is the 3.0-liter V6 biturbo in the GLS 400 4Matic, which delivers 333PS (324hp) and 480Nm (354lb-ft) of torque. Combined fuel consumption is 8.9 l/100 km (26.4 mpg US).

Moving on, the GLS 500 4Matic with a 4.7-liter V8 biturbo engine now generates 455PS (449hp) – 20hp more than the previous model – and 700Nm (516lb-ft) of torque. Finally, the range-topping GLS 63 4Matic features a 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine rated at 585PS (577hp) and 760Nm (560lb-ft) of torque – 28hp more than the GL 63 AMG.

With the exception of the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, which gets the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission, all models will feature the 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission as standard. The GLS will be available to order from late 2015, with deliveries in Europe and the U.S. starting from March 2016. Prices in Germany start from €62,850 for the GLS 350 d 4Matic.
