Next Jaguar XJ may return as fully-electric luxury sedan

Goes on sale next year, might look like our rendering

Jaguar XJ is currently the sportiest and nicest car to drive in its segment, which puts the big sedan in a kind of niche of its own as all rivals are geared much more towards plushness.

It has been around for a few years now (debuted in 2009) and according to a recent report published by Autocar, its replacement will change the formula and again be a different proposal compared to rivals.

The quoted article suggests that the model is already deep in its development cycle which is being carried out alongside a Range Rover model which apparently is internally named “Road Rover,” hinting at its focus more on on-road driving – it may have something to do with this report.

No internal combustion engines (at all) will purportedly be offered in the new XJ so as “to avoid diluting the impact around its reinvention.”

It goes on to say that the XJ replacement’s styling is right now receiving the final touches by Ian Callum and his team. The luxo EV will also reportedly bring a new styling language to Jaguar, but since we can’t guess what it is, I used the I-Pace as a starting point to make this quick rendering.

This report also indirectly hints at the fact that the next XJ will become a Tesla Model S rival too, and if it holds true it will become the first luxury sedan from an established manufacturer.
