Can’t decide between the C-Class Coupé and S-Class Coupé? The two-door E-Class is the solution
The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé is here as a bigger alternative to the C-Class Coupé and a more affordable alternative to the S-Class Coupé.
Based technically on the E-Class Sedan, the 2018 E-Class Coupé looks like a bigger version of its C-Class counterpart, but don't let that fool you. The two-door E-Class is more than that, combining the elegance of a grand tourer with the latest technology from Mercedes-Benz — including semi-automated driving.
The fourth member of the E-Class family (after the Sedan, Estate, and the All-Terrain), the Coupé is a significant improvement over its predecessor, which had C-Class underpinnings. With a 4,826 mm length, 1,860 mm width, 1,430 mm height, and a 2,873 mm wheelbase, the 2018 E-Class Coupé is bigger than the previous model in all areas, including the cabin that offers much-improved legroom for rear passengers.
There's not much to say about the interior design either because the dashboard is sourced from the E-Class Sedan. There's nothing wrong about that because it looks great — particularly with the two optional 12.3-inch displays merged under a single lens to produce what Mercedes-Benz calls a Widescreen Cockpit.
The 2018 E-Class will launch with four Euro 6 engines in Europe, all equipped with ECO start/stop and mated to a standard 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. There's the new 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder unit rated at 194 PS (191 hp) in the E 220 d Coupé, as well as three gasoline engines. An 184 PS 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is offered in the E 200 Coupé, a 245 PS 2.0-liter turbo-four in the E 300 Coupé, and a 333 PS 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 in the E 400 4MATIC Coupé. More engines and 4MATIC versions will follow later on. In North America, the E-Class Coupé will launch with the twin-turbo V6 in both rear- and all-wheel drive configurations.
The most economical variant is the diesel, rated at 4.0 liters/100 km and 106 g/km CO2, while the quickest is the E 400 4MATIC Coupé which goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. The model comes as standard with the Direct Control suspension, which is set 15 mm lower than on the sedan. The Dynamic Body Control suspension with adjustable damping is optionally available, as is the Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension.
The all-new E-Class Coupé will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January and will arrive in Europe and North America in summer 2017.
