The power and torque boost dramatically improves performance
The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5's 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine delivers 160 hp, and that's good enough for most people.
But the Japanese roadster's sweet chassis can handle more power with ease, and that's where British tuner BBR comes in. Its recently released "Super 200" package for the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine turns the Mazda MX-5 into a ferocious little beast.
BBR didn't go for turbocharging or supercharging, instead applying mechanical and electronic upgrades to boost the four-cylinder engine to 205 hp at 6,950 rpm and 179 lb-ft (242 Nm) of torque at 4,950 rpm. This translates into a 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of just 5.65 seconds, compared to 7.3 seconds on the standard car. With further optional upgrades (the Super 200+ kit), the tiny Japanese sports car can be dialed up to 214 hp and 183 lb-ft (248 Nm) of torque.
That's quite an upgrade from the 2.0-liter engine's standard spec of 160 hp at 6,300 rpm and 153 lb-ft (207 Nm) at 4,950 rpm, don't you think?
BBR claims that the Super 200 kit not only boosts power and torque but also allows the engine to rev higher, up to 7,150 rpm. Furthermore, the power and torque output exceeds that of the stock 2.0-liter MX-5 throughout the rev range, offering an additional 30 lb-ft (41 Nm) of torque at just 3,500 rpm, thus improving the driving experience in everyday conditions.
The Super 200 kit starts from £2,195 (excluding VAT) in the UK while the Super 200+ pack costs an additional £890.
BBR also offers chassis upgrades to go with the Super 200 and Super 200+ packages. These include a Sport suspension kit including Koni adjustable dampers and BBR lowering springs, a BBR/Eibach adjustable anti-roll bar kit, a BBR/Wilwood four-piston front brake caliper upgrade package, and a BBR/Wilwood brake upgrade.
