More competition for the Porsche Panamera on the horizon
UPDATE: According to the Instagram video posted by Mercedes-AMG, the four-door sports car will be a hybrid. We know this because the EQ Power+ badging appears on the concept's video cameras that would act as side mirrors and it's the same badge Mercedes-AMG will use to designate performance hybrids.
That means the biturbo V8 is still in the cards, but Mercedes-AMG will fit the four-door GT with an electric motor that would assist the internal combustion unit.
As of last year, Mercedes-Benz decided to unite its electrification efforts under the EQ brand, which also spawned a prototype SUV good for 300 kW (402 hp) and combined torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). Called the Generation EQ, the concept it also capable of covering 500 km (311 miles) on a single charge.
Affalterbach's spearhead, the AMG GT, spawned a handful of versions along the way, and by the looks of it, Mercedes-AMG also wants to explore the four-door territory with its sports car.
Just a couple of days ahead of Geneva, the Germans dropped a teaser photo showing what they call the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept, "an advance view of its four-door sports car at the Geneva Motor Show."
At this point, there's not much we can tell you on the model's performance credentials, but it would only be logical for the four-door to rely on the same 4.0-liter biturbo V8 animating the coupé and roadster.
We could also see an increased power output extracted from the engine, as the extra two doors and overall length should make the car heavier than the two-door variants.
Based on the same principle, the engine will remain mated to the seven-speed dual clutch transmission routing the resources to the rear wheels. It's also possible that Affalterbach decides to throw in the 4Matic all-wheel drive setup, but that's pure speculation at this point.
