2017 Kia Soul Gets Subtle Makeover, 201 HP 1.6L Turbo Engine

Kia is refreshing the Soul for the 2017 model year in Europe

Debuting at the Paris Motor Show, the updated Soul lineup is highlighted by the new engine, which is the most powerful unit ever fitted to a Kia Soul.

Sourced from the cee'd GT and pro_cee'd GT, the turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine allows the Soul to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 122 mph (196 km/h).That's in part due to Kia's fast-shifting seven-speed double-clutch transmission (7DCT), which is also said to favor low fuel consumption — the automaker quotes CO2 emissions of 156 g/km.

Models fitted with the 1.6L T-GDI engine with 7DCT are available with a new Drive Mode Selector, which lets drivers switch between Normal, Eco and Sport modes to adjust steering assistance.

Kia Soul models powered by the 201 hp engine feature visual enhancements including a bolder front bumper and air intake grille design, twin exhaust pipes at the rear, and dedicated 10-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels. Red highlights on the front bumper and side sills complete the sportier appearance of the T-GDI model, while the interior gets a unique color scheme combining black cloth with leather upholstery and orange highlights.

Besides the range-topping model, the rest of the Kia Soul lineup has been given a nip and tuck as well. Exterior updates include restyled front and rear bumpers with a metallic skid plate, optional bi-function HID headlights with LED DRLs, a subtly updated grille, new fog lamps at the rear, as well as new switchgear and trim inside.

The Kia Soul range also gets Kia's latest 5-, 7- or 8-inch color touchscreen infotainment systems, available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Eight-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat and new rain-sensing windscreen wipers are also available.

The updated Korean crossover will arrive in Europe from late 2016.
