2018 Huracan Performante Spyder on its way to becoming Lamborghini’s hottest drop-top

It should also bag the title for the fastest convertible around the Nürburgring

For a short while, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante enjoyed the title of the fastest production car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, after it set a blistering 6min52.01s lap in March this year.

The record only stood for two months, however, as the Nio EP9 electric supercar shaved 6.1 seconds off the Performante's Nordschleife time (only to be superseded by Lanzante's McLaren P1 LM two weeks later).

Lamborghini shouldn't be sad, though, as it has another ace up its sleeve: the topless version of the Huracan Performante, the Spyder. The Italians don't even bother covering up the test prototype too much, as you can see in these spy shots.

Only the rear deck, the upper side of the rear wing, and a portion of the front bonnet are covered with camouflage, leaving the rest of the car to be admired in all of its splendor. As with the coupé, the Spyder sports "Performante" lettering on the doors along with the Italian flag.

The powertrain will obviously be sourced from the coupé as well, so the Performante Spyder will feature the same 5.2-liter V10 engine dialed up to 640 metric horsepower compared to the base Huracan Spyder's 610 hp. The motor also gets a lighter exhaust system with the tips placed higher than on the regular Huracan. The new exhaust also allows Lamborghini to fit a bigger rear diffuser on the Performante Spyder for even more downforce.

Performance should be similar to the Huracan Performante Coupé, so expect a 0-100 km/h in around 3 seconds and a top speed exceeding 320 km/h (199 mph). The Huracan Performante Spyder will debut in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
