Halfway down its career path, the Miata is in for a nip and tuck
That the Mazda MX-5 Miata is on course to a well deserved facelift shouldn’t surprise a lot of folks, but it’s the details of this facelift that hold the enticing bit.
Last month, Road&Track uncovered a document filed with the NHTSA which said the 2019 Mazda MX-5 will retain the 2-liter Skyactiv-G engine but with a bumped up power output. More precise, from 155 horsepower to 181 horsepower – which is significant, however you’re looking at it.
A new report coming from Road&Track with info gathered from miata.net touches on torque, which has reportedly gone up by 3 lb-ft to 151 lb-ft. Recap: from what’s out there at the moment, the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata ND will make 181 hp and 151 lb-ft. If these figures are exact, then Mazda listened to all those voices claiming the Miata felt underpowered.
Furthermore, the 2019 Miata will feature a dual-mass flywheel meant to shut down the extra grunt in terms of NVH but will drop the CD player. Sorry, nostalgics.
Safety-wise, the tweaked Miata is also said to feature a smart city braking system, a steering wheel that’s now adjustable in both depth and height and a rearview camera.
We’ll keep an eye open for more info on the topic.
