The upcoming G 63 has been caught on camera during winter testing
As you probably know, an all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class is due next year, after 38 years of production with slight design changes.
For the 2018 G-Class, Mercedes promises more visible styling updates, chief of which will be a 100-mm wider body needed to accommodate a wider track.
While the revised proportions will have an effect on the visual appearance of the new G-Class, they will not change it dramatically. The G-Class will retain its boxy body with a steep windshield, although some design details from the 2012 Ener-G-Force may find their way onto the production vehicle.
As before, the lineup will be spearheaded by AMG models, with the upcoming G-Class expected to get a G 63 version shortly after the launch of regular variants. As you can see from these spy shots, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 will feature a more muscular appearance than less potent models, thanks to more aggressive bumpers, additional air intakes, and more prominent exhaust pipes.
The G 63 will be even wider than regular G-Class models thanks to a wider track with bulged wheel arches. Performance should be superior to the current G 63 thanks to the lighter body (by up to 200 kg/441 lb) and more power. The 2018 G 63 will drop the 5.5-liter biturbo V8 engine for the new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 unit that may deliver up to 603 hp — if Mercedes-AMG will offer it in the same states of tune as on the E 63.
While the all-new G-Class is expected to debut in the second half of 2017, the G 63 will likely arrive in early 2018. The upcoming G-Class will continue to be built by Magna Steyr at its plant in Graz, Austria.
