All-Time Mazda MX-5 Production Reaches 1 Million Milestone

The world’s best-selling convertible has reached another impressive production achievement

On April 22, 2016, total production of the popular Mazda MX-5 (known as the MX-5 Miata in North America and Roadster in Japan) reached one million units. It took the Japanese automaker 27 years to achieve this milestone, with mass-production of the MX-5 starting at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima in April 1989. The previous production milestone was achieved in February 2011 when Mazda built the 900,000th MX-5 roadster.

"From the first generation through to today's fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 all these years is due to the strong support of fans around the world," said Mazda President and CEO Masamichi Kogai.

The one-millionth MX-5 will go on display at fan events in Japan and around the world, with the tour beginning on May 3 at the Hiroshima Flower Festival where the vehicle will participate in the Flower Parade.

The Mazda MX-5 has held the Guinness World Record for the best-selling open-top two-seater sports car for many years. The model's success throughout three decades has been attributed to the driving fun it offers thanks to its lightweight construction, rear-wheel drive, and affordable pricing.

There have been four generations of the MX-5 so far: the NA (1989-1997), NB (1997-2005), NC (2005-2014), and ND (2014-present).
