Face Swap: Trying to beat the Germans with Giulia, Alfa Romeo inadvertently joined them

So much so that their 3-Series rival pretty much looks like a swoopier 3-Series

Giulia is the first rear-wheel drive sedan made by Alfa Romeo in three decades, so in order to make it competitive, the Italian automaker had to peek over the fence at what other brands had been up to in the meantime. Those developing the car must have really had a BMW 3-Series fixation (and understandably so) because it’s not hard to see visual similarities between it and the Giulia.

I mean the proportions are all there, and if you paste Giulia design cues onto the BMW body they’re not really out of place. It actually doesn’t look half-bad as a BMW, the Giulia, as you can see in this amusing face-swap rendering I whipped up for the purpose of illustrating this article.

Of course, out of the two, it’d be the Alfa which would take home first prize in a beauty contest. But it isn’t perfect, though, especially with those oddly-shaped headlights that could realistically have been better – while I still prefer the Alfa overall, I actually like the BMW’s headlight and grille combo better.

So it seems there is really only one compact sports sedan recipe in the world these days, and it looks like Alfa straight up copied it (from the best) then pasted its own details over it and finished it off with a Ferrari-derived engine that was sure to shut everybody up – which it did…
