Honda announces 2018 Odyssey pricing, is out to dominate U.S. minivan market again

The all-new minivan goes on sale today across the United States

Unveiled in January at the Detroit Motor Show, Honda's all-new 2018 Odyssey minivan finally goes on sale today in the U.S. with a starting MSRP of $29,990 (excluding $900 destination). That's a $140 increase over the starting price of the 2017 Odyssey.

Despite the evolutionary approach to styling, the fifth-generation Odyssey is redesigned inside and out, gaining a more powerful engine, a new 10-speed automatic transmission, and an improved cabin including new Magic Slide seats.

In the powertrain department, the 2018 Odyssey gains an updated 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) that adds 32 more horsepower than before for a total of 280 hp, with the peak torque also growing by 12 lb-ft to 262 lb-ft (355 Nm). Two new transmissions are available: a 9-speed automatic for LX, EX, EX-L, and EX-L NAVI RES trims, and a 10-speed automatic with standard paddle shifters for Touring and Elite trims.

Honda says the new drivetrain delivers "best-in-class acceleration" and improved EPA fuel economy ratings of 19/28/22 mpg (city/highway/combined).

While one shouldn't expect driving thrills from a big minivan, Honda is adamant the 2018 Odyssey's 75-lb (34-kg) lighter and 44-percent more rigid body structure improves steering and handling precision. The new dual-pinion electric power steering system improves handling too, as does the rear suspension with stabilizer bar that helps reduce body roll — all without affecting the "exceptional ride comfort."

When it comes to comfort, the automaker claims the new minivan represents a significant improvement over its predecessor. That's due to the quieter cabin with Active Noise Control technology, the standard Honda Sensing safety pack (for EX and above trims), and the new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new Magic Slide second-row seats that slide laterally depending on the needed configuration also contribute to increasing comfort (from the EX grade upwards).

Range-topping Touring and Elite trim levels can be fitted with new features and technologies including 4G LTE Wi-Fi, Rear Entertainment System with Blu-ray and streaming video, Cabin Watch day/night video monitor, hands-free power tailgate and more.
