Is the 1987 Mercedes-Benz AMG Hammer the coolest performance wagon ever made?

Yes, yes there are others, but none can match its blend of stage presence, name coolness and V8 rumble all in one

Back in the days when AMG was still a tuner not part of Mercedes-Benz, they made mad motors like this 1987 AMG Hammer estate, a real bruiser even by modern standards. It packs a 400 hp V8 and it looks like it means business.

Most of these early AMGs actually started out in life as different cars with lesser engines which were then gutted and reassembled with performance parts and much bigger hearts – this particular car featured in this Petrolicious video started out in life as a diesel which was given to AMG and resulted in this.

It’s an utterly unique proposition, combining one of the best styling languages of the late 1980s with huge load lugging capacity and a six-liter V8. Nowadays there are models to choose from to fit that bill, but back before 1990 this was a much harder combo to put together.

And it really works as a visual package, with the custom body colored rims, lowered stance and that deep dark green that just draws your eye. It also has the name to match its presence and driving character too – I don’t think they could have ever picked a better name for this; it just sounds right and the word is actually the same in both English and German and with that in mind, I say this is the single coolest estate car ever made.
