Jaguar I-PACE Concept Takes to London Streets for the First Time

The electric crossover concept is warming up for its production debut in 2018

You've already seen the Jaguar I-PACE wearing a vivid red paint for the Geneva Motor Show.

Now, the UK carmaker has taken it to public streets for the first time — more specifically, to London's famous Olympic Park. While the I-PACE stands out in the urban setting, the photo gallery and the video look a little eerie because there's no other car on the streets.

It's easy to understand why: a concept vehicle like the I-PACE costs millions of euros, and Jaguar probably didn't want to take any chances in London's congested traffic. Most likely, access to the Olympic Park was restricted for vehicles the day these photos were taken.

"Driving the concept on the streets is really important for the design team. It's very special to put the car outside and in the real-world. You can see the true value of the I-PACE's dramatic silhouette and powerful proportions when you see it on the road, against other cars."

Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design

The Jaguar I-PACE electric performance SUV concept previews the brand's first EV, which will be called I-PACE as well and will debut in late 2017 before arriving on the road in the second half of next year.

Jaguar says the I-PACE will offer a driving range of more than 500 km (NEDC cycle), thanks to a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers two electric motors placed at the front and rear axles for AWD capability. Producing a combined 400 PS (396 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, the motors allow the I-PACE to sprint from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in around 4 seconds. Charging the battery to 80 percent will take just 90 minutes using 50 kW DC charging.

Jaguar promises its EV will deliver "the agility, ride comfort and refinement that will set it apart from all other electric vehicles," making it "a true Jaguar and a true drivers' car."
