Lamborghini aims to jump the self-driving bandwagon last

Well, who can challenge their rationale?

With both electric and autonomous revolutions knocking at the doors, carmakers have already chosen their path to shape the future transportation. And yes, most of them have pledged to develop self-driving cars in the next five years or so, but not Lamborghini.

Sant’Agata Bolognese is preparing to launch the Urus SUV (most likely next March in Geneva) but the Italians won’t give up on the supercar business. Subsequently, Lamborghini isn’t very keen on switching to self-driving gimmicks too soon.

Speaking to Digital Trends, Maurizio Reggiani, head of R&D at Lamborghini made it clear that as far as “real autonomous driving” is concerned, Lambo “will be the last brand to offer it.”

Should you let that sink it, the Mr. Reggiani’s words make sense. Just think about it: would you want an Aventador or Huracán that drives itself? Exactly. Maybe, just maybe, some might find that function useful for an SUV, but even so, a Lambo SUV is still a Lambo.

What’s more, Mr. Reggiani confirmed that his company won’t fall behind when it comes to safety gear. In other words, the Urus SUV would offer the likes of cruise control, lane keeping assist, cameras and connectivity features.

However, don’t expect flashy tablet-like displays and gesture control to make an appearance in Lamborghini’s super-sports cars, as these gimmicks put a dent in the pleasure offered by driving such performance-oriented vehicles.

Leaving modern times aside, here’s a bunch of stunning classic Lamborghinis that had their own concours d’elegance in Switzerland.
