Mercedes-AMG GT sedan takes on the Nürburgring for the first time

And manages to look like it belongs there

The forthcoming Mercedes-AMG GT four-door supercar has reached the most serious stage of its development: the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

These are the first spy shots with the new model on the "Green Hell," and the more practical version of the AMG supercar manages a rare feat for a four-door vehicle: it doesn't look out of place on the treacherous track.

Previewed by the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the four-door version of the AMG GT supercar will be different not only styling-wise but also when it comes to the powertrain.

It will pack a hybrid system inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Formula One cars, combining a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor for a total of 805 horsepower. The hybrid powertrain will also use the EQ Power+ name from the F1 car, a badge that will be applied to all future performance hybrids from the Mercedes-Benz brand.

With that kind of power, the Mercedes-AMG GT sedan is expected to cover the 0-100 km/h sprint in under three seconds, all while offering a normal cargo volume and a spacious cabin. Take that, Mercedes-AMG GT R!

The hybrid system will allow the car to be driven in an all-electric mode (range not available yet), but e-power will also be available as a supplement to the V8 engine when maximum performance is needed. The battery will be charged while the vehicle is driven, more specifically during braking or, if battery level drops too far, directly from the combustion engine.

Expect the Mercedes-AMG GT four door to debut sometime next year.
