Paris 2016: Lexus Kinetic Seat Concept Wants to Redefine the Way You Look at Automotive Seating

It looks like a brass sculpture that was left in the attic and colonized by very neat spiders

Lexus seems to be into completely redefining the way a car seat looks as it’s about to show off its Kinetic Seat concept at the Paris motor show. While the car seat of the future won’t look as flashy as this, it does show how it could evolve into something with less padding and a more visible frame.

The automaker explains that it actually used human anatomy as a basis and inspiration for the seat concept. You can definitely see this in the structure, as there’s a definite ‘spine’ holding up backrest which kind of looks like a rib cage.

There is no conventional padding on this seat whatsoever. It uses what Lexus calls a “spider web-pattern net with threads that spread out radially from the centre of the back rest. The net is sufficiently flexible to closely fit the shape of the body, dispersing the load to make it possible to sit comfortably for prolonged periods.”

The material, called QMONOS and developed by Spiber Inc., is used for the ‘spider web’ is a synthetic fiber that’s manufactured in an environmentally-friendly way. It’s apparently flexible yet very strong and works wonders in this application.
