The possibilities it offers for automotive action scenes seem boundless
Movies and car commercials already use CGI and augmented reality on video, but there’s currently no dedicated solution to shoot a car without actually having it in your possession. Enter Project Raven, a development of the Blackbird, a modular, rolling chassis of sorts which has position plates on it so that a 3D rendered body can believably be put on top.
The technique itself per se is not new, but Project Raven is intended to be a one stop shop in this respect. Its results look pretty spectacular, we have to admit, especially since it uses surround cameras to capture scenery and light as it’s being driven – the information is then used to create believable reflection on the rendered model used.
This kind of tech is still in its infancy, though, and it’s currently being developed with the future in mind – the main goal here is to have a solid foundation on which to build and improve. The thing is, for a project so early on, the results and freedom it offers are already highly impressive – what heights will this tech reach within the next decade and what will it make obsolete?
