Rear-wheel drive Audi R8 may debut at Frankfurt motor show

They haven’t confirmed the RWD R8 via a press release but used an Instagram video instead

Audi has never made a rear-wheel drive-only version of its R8 mid-engined supercar, but that’s all about to change at this year’s edition of the Frankfurt motor show. The automaker has yet to announce in writing, but it has released a rather suggestive video onto its official Instagram account.

Said video shows an example of the latest R8 doing donuts, shot from above – undeniable proof that the car in the video sends all of its power to the rear wheels. The smoke that billows exclusively from the rear tires lends further credibility to the claim that this is indeed a rear-wheel drive car.

We’ll have to wait and see it confirmed, though, and until then we can make educated guesses like the fact that it may have less power than regular all-wheel drive R8s, if the same strategy used to create the Lamborghini Gallardo Balboni is employed here. It will also probably be the cheapest R8 you can buy and its handling manners will be of a much more lively character than those of the all-wheel drive variant.
