The battery packs are destined for Tesla’s Model 3 EV sedan
Forget the aerial shots of the Nevada-based Gigafactory; it’s business time for the plant as battery production is finally kicking off.
Tesla Motors started building the Gigafactory 1 near Reno, Nevada three years ago. The plant’s primary job was to supply Elon Musk’s company with battery packs for the affordable $35,000 Tesla Model 3 sedan.
According to Electrek, the battery production line is alive and kicking at the time of writing, as confirmed by Tesla’s CTO JB Straubel during a keynote presentation at last weekend’s Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Annual Energy Fair in Wisconsin.
The official also added that the production line could be boosted to provide enough battery packs in case the car’s assembly line becomes too crowded.
In any case, the plant is expected to produce around 500,000 battery packs by next year’s end, when the first batch of Model 3 electric cars is to reach their owners.
