Volvo S90 Excellence Flagship Debuts in China Without a Front Passenger Seat

It’s replaced by a fancy Lounge Console that makes trips more relaxing for the privileged rear seat passenger

Volvo has unveiled the S90 sedan for the Chinese market, including the flagship luxury version called S90 Excellence.

Scheduled to debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show (November 19-27), both the regular Volvo S90 and S90 Excellence target China's high-end sedan market. Both versions will be built at Volvo Car's plant in Daqinq, China, and exported to markets around the world.

The S90 Excellence's main feature is the lack of a front passenger seat, replaced with something Volvo calls a Lounge Console. Essentially a fancy footrest, the Lounge Console is designed "to meet the chauffeur-driven executive customers' need to relax or work while on the move."

Besides this defining feature, the flagship S90 Excellence comes equipped with a full panoramic roof, foldout worktables, a heated and cooled cup holder, an adjustable footrest and a built-in entertainment system. The luxury sedan also features a rear-seat touchscreen control interface, a built-in refrigeration compartment, and handmade crystal glasses from Swedish glassmaker Orrefors.

Under the hood, the China-spec Volvo S90 will be available with Volvo's T4 and T5 gasoline engines as well as the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. The S90 Excellence will come exclusively with the T8 powertrain.

Standard safety equipment for both models include the City Safety system with Large Animal Detection, and the Pilot Assist hands-on-the-wheel semi-autonomous driver assistance system. Other features include smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as a new CleanZone air quality system that employs an ionic air cleaner.
