We take an early digital look at 2018 Mercedes CLS and 2019 AMG GT four-door coupés

Which one do you like best?

When Mercedes-Benz launched the first-generation CLS in 2004, it marked the beginning of the "four-door coupé" craze.

By combining the low, curved roofline of a coupé with an additional pair of doors, the automaker created a body style that proved very successful for other manufacturers too.

Fast forward to 2017 and Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch the third-generation CLS, one that may be unveiled later this year before going on sale in 2018. But that's not the only new four-door coupé the brand has in store for us.

There's also the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door, previewed earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show by the AMG GT Concept. You can get an idea of both upcoming models' styling by taking a look at these renderings courtesy of Automedia, which in your eyes are quite accurate anticipations of the respective production models.

While the rendered 2018 CLS seems a natural evolution of the current model complete with the brand's latest styling language, the AMG GT 4-door should cause quite a stir when it debuts late next year. Adding two doors to a supercar as flat as the AMG GT will give the 4-door dramatic proportions that will certainly not go unnoticed on the street.

As before, the CLS will share underpinnings with the E-Class, so expect it to get the more powerful engine options available in the W213 generation. As for the AMG-branded four-door coupé, it will combine a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor for a total of 805 horsepower.

Exciting times ahead, don't you think? Well, wait until the all-electric EQ family comes along.
