VW to turn I.D. Buzz concept intro road-ready electric microbus

The classic, reinterpreted

The Volkswagen Bulli lives on and prepares to add more years to its seven-decade history as Wolfsburg confirms the rumors saying the I.D. Buzz concept will spawn a production microbus come 2022.

Volkswagen has a large electrification plan stacked with bold intentions that trumpet 30 all-electric cars by 2030, so it's not quite a surprise that they're going to turn the I.D. Buzz prototype into a road-legal car.

"After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, 'please build this car'"

Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess

At this early stage, info on the production model is rather scarce, but VW says the battery pack will sit under the vehicle's floor, thus allowing engineers to stretch the wheelbase and shorten the overhangs, boosting inside space in the process.

Furthermore, VW will additionally offer a banausic version – also electric – destined for cargo hauling and available with Level 3 automated driving.

Elsewhere, someone thought the I.D. Buzz is far from the original Bulli's karma, so he took a pair of Beetle headlights and with the aid of pixel manipulation wizardry gave the I.D. Buzz a new face. The right one, actually.
