Tesla started producing cars in 2008, so it is a very recent entry in the automotive industry. The company was actually founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, although the company also considers Elon Musk, JB Straubel, and Ian Wright amongst its co-founders. Elon Musk is now in charge of the company. Besides producing cars, Tesla also manufactures batteries and solar panels.

The first car of the brand was the Tesla Roadster and it was based on a Lotus design. In 2012, the company launched the Model S, a fully electric luxury sedan. Its range, full-charged, is rated at around 400 km (250 miles), depending on battery type and road conditions.

As of December 2016, Tesla has sold over 186,000 electric cars worldwide since delivery of its first Tesla Roadster in 2008. Tesla has, however, much bigger plans.

The recently added Model X (in the second half of 2015, to be more precise), a crossover, is expected to boost sales. As of December 2016, 25,524 units have been delivered worldwide, with the majority finding customers in the United States.

Currently, the car manufacturer's biggest gamble is the Model 3. This is expected to become the brand's biggest seller to date, as it will cost $35,000 before incentives. The range of the Model 3 will be 346 km (215 miles), while deliveries are expected to start at the end of 2017.
